It’s hard to believe that the 2015-16 season is now almost at it’s halfway mark. The action and parity that have been exhibited by multiple programs has been diverse and rich. I haven’t seen this much variety among the conferences since the mid 1990’s. Nothing really signifies the meat of the HBCU band circuit than the annual clash between the Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South, and the Human Jukebox of Southern University. This rivalry to our craft is equal to Ohio State/Michigan in football, or Duke/North Carolina in basketball. Whether it’s in Jackson or Baton Rouge, you’re guaranteed to see one of the great spectacles of the HBCU game day and fan experience. Without further adieu, here are some sights and sounds from what’s become affectionately known as the ‘Boombox Classic’.
Fine tune your sensory apparatus and enjoy!
P.S. Check out the new blog of the ‘First Lady’ of HBCU Band Online Social Media (and one of the Founders of the 5th Quarter), Christy Walker. Diary of a Female Bandhead is another great view of what it means to be part of the culture that is the HBCU Marching Band experience. Check her out!
